ACADEMIC ACTIVITIES
In the last two decades of its existence, the PGMI has grown into a teaching institute of this province. There are a total of 41, teaching units of PGMI at LRH and HMC, staff with highly qualified faculty members. Most of these units are recognized by the CPSP for formal training of FCPS Trainees. Beside the degree courses, some of the units are also offering diplomas courses like DCH, DGO, DO, DLO, DCP and DA.Almost all of these teaching units have a “Minimum Mandatory Teaching Program” for the trainees. The salient features of the mandatory teaching program include teaching rounds, grand rounds, lecture by faculty members, departmental CPC presented by the TMOs, journal clubs, case presentations (both short and long), besides departmental audit, mortality meetings and interdepartmental.The Executive Committee of the PGMI keeps a regular check on the continuity of the academic activities during its Annual Academic Inspection and Evaluation of the various units. The annual academic inspection also includes a direct feedback from the TMOs of the unit.The clinic pathological conferences (CPC) of the two campuses i.e. LRH & HMC are one of the most regularly and well attended academic activities of the PGMI. All teaching units of the PGMI participate and present cases regularly on this forum. A PGMI committee looks into the quality of the presentations of each unit and suggests changes/improvements as and when needed. Besides the major CPC, there is one medicine and allies and a surgical and allied CPC on different days of the week. All the TMOs and faculty members are required to attend these CPCs.The PGMI also regularly organizes seminars, symposia and workshops on common and important subjects. These activities are adorned by the tireless efforts of the teachers of PGMI. The institute also invites eminent speakers and authorities from abroad to speak on important subjects. The institute also arranges workshops for the trainees and teachers in collaboration with the CPSP Regional office, pre-examination intensive Courses for FCPS Part II are regularly organized annually by the Departments of Medicine, Surgery and Gynae Obstetrics. Manu trainees from all over the country attend these courses. The other departments of PGMI shall soon be offering similar courses in their own specialty.The teachers of PGMI are also heavily involved in the academic affairs of the CPSP. Many of the teachers are members of the various faculties and are also examiners for MCPs/DCPS and FCPS.Nearly all the academic units of the PGMI are regularly involved in organizing National and International conferences in Peshawar. These conferences are heavily attended and contribute a lot to the academic activities. The teaching faculty of the PGMI is constantly involved in the continuing medical education (CME) of the general parishioners and other doctors by delivering lectures, organizing workshops and offering training in their fields from time to time.
